Return your Roku Device to Factory Settings
If you are experiencing persistent issues with your Roku device, it may be necessary to perform a hard factory reset to return it to it’s default settings, so that you can set it up from scratch once more.
In most instances, you can perform a hard factory reset within your device settings or by pressing the reset button on the device. Please note that in many instances, a hard factory reset should be considered as last resort and often, problems can be resolved by following troubleshooting guides found online.
If you do decide to hard factory reset your device, you will have to go through the initial set up sequence one more to get it working as expected. All of your settings and channels will be gone so please make sure you really do want to do this.
Hard resetting via the Settings menu
On more recent Roku models, you can hard reset simply by using your remote control, go to “Settings” and then select “System” from the options shown. Then select “Advanced System Settings” on the next screen and then press “Factory Reset”.
You will then be asked to enter the 4-digit code shown using the on screen keypad. Once entered, the factory hard reset process will begin.
Some older Roku models however may not have this option within the on-screen menus. You can still hard factory reset your device by using a special sequence of buttons using your remote control. They are:
- Press the “Home” button 5 times
- Then the “Fast Forward” button 3 times
- And finally, the “Rewind” button 2 times
This will launch a “Secret Screen”. From the screen, select “Factory Reset” using your remote control. You will then be asked to confirm our choice and then the reset process will begin.
Hard resetting older Roku devices
On older Roku boxes and sticks, press a pin or a straightened paperclip into the RESET hole at the rear or side of the device. Hold for 30 seconds and then release only when you see the Roku logo appear on screen. Do not release when you see a blank screen as that is only the reset phase.
Hard resetting newer Roku devices
At the bottom or the side of your device, you will find a RESET button.
Your Roku device can be restarted by pressing the button once however, to run a hard factory reset, press and hold the button for 6 seconds or until you see the Roku logo appear on screen. Do not release the button too early otherwise it will just restart the device without resetting back to factory defaults.
